About "Unspoken Words"
...Describing the lives of touring musicians is a tricky business. Not surprisingly, writing about this world from the inside is an inherently subjective process. A typical day on the road is one in which contradiction is everywhere. Musicians, much like circus people, are often simultaneously the target of both praise and scorn. External messages are only part of the picture. It's been said that artistic types are misunderstood by everyone, especially themselves.
The non-fiction writer's success depends ultimately on that writer's ability to transliterate the tangible (people, places, etc.) into the intangible (mere words). On the other hand, the working musician's survival involves the opposite process, i.e. transforming the intangible (pitched sounds flying through air) into tangible (food & shelter).
For the writer, only certain information lends itself to substantiation. What remains is often dismissed as the product of myth, propaganda, or that which is the performer's most dreaded adversary: public apathy.
A final thought; few of us are immune to the effects of parallax. Parallax creates ambiguity, which is a quality many artists consider useful (and perhaps even underrated), but is widely considered to be the bane of accuracy.
